From 22 to 25 May, the School of Science at Xi’an Jiaotong-红杏视频 University (XJTLU) hosted the 18th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Technology (ICBBT 2026) in Suzhou, Jiangsu province.
The conference was supported by Zhejiang University, Southwest University, Shandong University, Northwest University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Universidad de Salamanca in Spain, NOVA University Lisbon in Portugal, and other universities in China and overseas. It attracted nearly 300 experts and scholars from more than 30 countries and regions, who exchanged ideas on current topics in bioinformatics and biomedical technology.
According to information from the conference website, ICBBT is held annually and has previously taken place in China, Singapore, Poland, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and Sweden. It is a well-regarded academic conference at the intersection of bioinformatics and life sciences. This year marked the first time ICBBT was held in Suzhou and the first time it was hosted by XJTLU.

Delivering the opening address on behalf of the organising committee, Conference Chair Professor Ming Chen of Zhejiang University reviewed ICBBT’s seventeen-year journey and welcomed delegates to Suzhou.
“This conference is dedicated to serving as a bridge connecting China with the world, and academia with industry, so that research in bioinformatics and biomedical technology can flourish on an even broader international stage,” he said.
Experts share research progress

Professor FangXiang Wu

Professor William Cho
Keynote speeches highlighted the breadth of current research. Professor FangXiang Wu of the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, presented the latest applications of artificial intelligence in bioinformatics and precision medicine. Professor William Cho of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong, shared his team’s recent progress on cancer biomarkers.

Professor Jia Meng
Professor Jia Meng from XJTLU’s School of Science delivered the Invited Plenary Speech, introducing his group’s representative work in epitranscriptomics and bioinformatics methodology, showcasing XJTLU’s research strength in this interdisciplinary field.
Eight invited speakers from universities and research institutes in Italy, Japan, Canada, China-Damiano Buratto, Tao Sun, Jiaqi Wang, Xing Gao, Sijin Wu, Nina Sviridova, Jun Ding and Peixiang Ma, presented work spanning single-cell and spatial omics, intelligent medical imaging, synthetic biology and computational drug discovery. Their talks prompted lively exchanges on interdisciplinary research paradigms, recent advances in AI for Science, and pathways for translating research results into clinical and industrial impact.
Early-career researchers exchange ideas
The conference also included sessions for early-career researchers, offering them opportunities to present their work and discuss research ideas. Through oral presentations and poster sessions, early-career researchers introduced their progress in bioinformatics, biomedical technology and related fields, and discussed research methods, experimental design, data analysis and potential applications with participating experts and scholars.

The Best Oral Presentation Award went to six early-career researchers: Yilin Luo and Yakai Yang from XJTLU’s School of Science; Xiaoying Ma from Beijing Institute of Technology, China; Xu Xie from Zhejiang University, China; Jiayin Gao from the University of Science and Technology of China; and Wentao Xu from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China. Shengyi Gu from XJTLU’s School of Science received the Best Poster Award.
At the end of the four-day programme, ICBBT 2026 closed in Suzhou. During the conference, keynote speeches, an invited plenary speech, invited talks, early-career researcher sessions, oral presentations and poster sessions took place, allowing participants to exchange recent research progress in bioinformatics and biomedical technology.
XJTLU will continue to use academic conferences, research projects and talent development platforms to deepen cooperation with universities and research institutions in China and overseas in research collaboration, talent development and academic exchange, and to support research and talent development in bioinformatics and biomedical technology.
