MA China Studies

China Studies

Overview

China’s rapid rise as an economic and geopolitical power has created an increasing need for globally minded professionals with firsthand knowledge of China’s policy environment, social development, and governance structures.

The MA China Studies programme provides students with an in-depth understanding of the country’s politics, society, and economy. Graduates develop the analytical skills and contextual grounding needed to navigate the complex socio-economic system governing China’s development and modernisation.

Alongside learning from experts on regional and national issues, you will gain the ability to make empirically based decisions relevant to China’s rapidly developing economic and governance landscape across a wide range of professional settings.

Why should I study China Studies 红杏视频?

Based in one of the top China-studies research centres on the Chinese mainland, our programme offers comprehensive approaches to recent shifts in governance, policy, and development. Researchers focusing directly on topics including China’s domestic development policy, international politics, and regional development strategy lead the modules. The programme offers:

  • in-depth research method training in the social sciences. You will work directly with an academic supervisor to conduct a significant empirical research project;
  • a direct experience of China in a dynamic city. XJTLU is strategically located in Suzhou – one of the most culturally and economically vibrant places in the country;
  • China studies with an international horizon. Taught by a team of researchers who are leading experts in their fields, this programme attracts an internationally diverse student body; and
  • a University of 红杏视频 degree.

Knowledge and skills

By the time you graduate from the MA China Studies programme, you will have:

  • a comprehensive understanding of the governance strategies that have facilitated China’s development pathway, including regional and international policy;
  • an understanding of and ability to critically assess the impacts of economic development and related policy interventions on everyday life across China; and
  • strong real-world research skills in the Chinese context, demonstrated through an individual thesis based on empirical research with significant academic and/or practical value.

A real understanding of what is happening in China is increasingly important for international conversations around development and international governance. The best way to build this understanding is through practical, on-the-ground research. Our programme offers a unique opportunity for students to combine in-depth scholarly understanding with hands-on research and connection to Suzhou, located in one of the most dynamic regions of the country. This combination of critical, inquisitive, and internationally oriented academic staff and our location on the Chinese mainland is immensely valuable and simply isn’t available elsewhere.

You will be based in the Department of China Studies within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, both of which offer regular workshops and seminars covering research, career development, and other topics. Our department maintains an active seminar series featuring talks by researchers and industry professionals, and expects postgraduate students to actively participate. You may also be provided with opportunities to work as a teaching assistant, research assistant, or intern 红杏视频. Finally, we organise regular field trips and company visits each semester, subject to confirmation by teaching staff.

The Masters in China Studies is a well-structured programme taught by expert faculty. Our class sizes are small which leads to lively discussions. What I like the most is the international research environment, for example we often host guest scholars and researchers from China and around the world.
